What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that treats the soft tissues, nerves, and blood vessels inside the tooth. Commonly known as "root canal treatment," this procedure aims to preserve the vitality of the tooth by cleaning the damaged, infected, or inflamed pulp. Endodontics focuses on internal problems caused by tooth decay, trauma, cracks, or other diseases, aiming to rejuvenate the tooth before considering extraction.

When is Endodontics Needed?

Endodontics is necessary in the following situations:

  • Deep Tooth Decay: Cavities that have progressed to the pulp can cause infections.

  • Trauma: Severe impact on the tooth can damage or kill the pulp.

  • Cracks and Fractures: Cracks or fractures in the tooth can harm the pulp.

  • Chronic Sensitivity: Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks may indicate a problem inside the tooth.

  • Abscess and Swelling: Infection spreading to the tooth's root can cause abscesses and swelling.

How is Endodontic Treatment Performed?

Endodontic treatment is carried out step-by-step as follows:

  1. Examination and Diagnosis: Before starting endodontic treatment, the dentist evaluates the problem with radiographs and a clinical examination. If infected pulp is detected, root canal treatment may be recommended.

  2. Local Anesthesia: The treatment area is numbed before the procedure to ensure the patient does not feel pain or discomfort.

  3. Access and Pulp Removal: A hole is drilled in the top of the tooth to remove the pulp. The infected or damaged pulp is cleaned out, and the canals are widened with special tools.

  4. Shaping and Cleaning the Canal: The canals are shaped and cleaned to remove all infection and bacteria inside the tooth.

  5. Application of Filling Material: The cleaned canals are filled and sealed with biocompatible materials to protect the inner part of the tooth.

  6. Restoration (Optional): After treatment, restorative procedures (crown or filling) may be applied to restore the tooth's shape and function.

What are the Costs of Endodontics?

The cost of endodontic treatment varies depending on the complexity of the procedure, the location of the tooth, the materials used, and the dentist's experience. Generally, treatment costs depend on the following factors:

  • Number of Teeth: Whether treatment is applied to a single tooth or multiple teeth.

  • Complexity of Treatment: The spread of the infection and the complexity of the treatment.

  • Materials: The type and quality of the filling materials used.

  • Clinic and Dentist Fees: The dentist's experience and the pricing policies of the clinic's location.

Typically, endodontic treatment costs are more affordable for simple cases and higher for complex cases. It is recommended to consult your dentist for exact price information.

Frequently Asked Questions About Endodontics

  • Is root canal treatment a painful procedure? During root canal treatment, local anesthesia is usually applied, so patients do not feel pain. The endodontist takes all necessary precautions to ensure patient comfort.

  • Is there pain after root canal treatment? Mild pain or sensitivity after the procedure is normal, but it is usually temporary. The endodontist provides necessary care instructions and recommendations to minimize pain.

  • How long does root canal treatment take? The duration of root canal treatment varies depending on the condition of the tooth. A simple case can take 1-2 hours, while complex cases or teeth with multiple canals may take longer.

  • Can root canal treatment fail? Like any treatment method, root canal treatment can fail. However, with modern techniques and equipment, the failure rate is quite low. In case of failure, alternative treatment options can be considered.

  • Is root canal treatment the only solution for a painful tooth? Root canal treatment preserves the tooth's vitality by cleaning infected or damaged pulp, but it may not be suitable for every situation. The dentist may evaluate various treatment options and consider other options, such as extraction.
